Classical Composition

Introduction to Music

I began composing at 14, at the time creating tuned percussion remix's of Skrillex songs. Over the next 8 years I went on to achieve a First Class degree in music, specialising in composition, at the University of Birmingham. Below you can explore my journey there.

01

Fall Away

Fall Away marks the final of my compositional series in Birmingham, and wholey represents the development of my style and taste in composition. A Romantic era string ensemble with a great level of harmonic detail and a flowing conversation of motifs between the instruments.

02

Cashmere

Cashmere is the culmination of my classical composition education - this one specifically inspired by Tchaikovsky's choral work - and my electroacoustic experimentation. Writing drums into a romantic era composition poses many balance issues, but the use of electroacoustic techniques opened a new way to express dynamics and emotion

03

Fronna

My final composition in year 2 of university focused on a physical study. I engaged with the life of Percy-Windham lewis, representing his life as '...one of the leading British avant-garde artists who explored the lessons of continental modernism.'

04

Composition 1

Composed in response to a brief for a fixed ensemble and defined technical constraints, this piece marked a shift toward a more deliberate compositional approach, with greater focus on harmonic depth and structural intent.

05

Jazz Suite - Year 1

This Jazz suite was a passion project in first year, and was played live once at a bar and never recorded. During this time I was a jazz drummer and this midi score shows the intent of my jazz compositions.

06

Drum Corps

My application to composition at university consisted of this piece, written at 16 this shows my enthusiasm as a percussionist in orchestras, touring and performing around the world.
